Kish Fish-Market

In Iran, coastal cities and islands are the greatest and the most important sources of supplying fish, so fish markets are the main sources of providing food. Also, the last chain of the process. Infrastructure and sanitary problems were the most important challenges the market faced. Kish Island has a subtropical hot desert type of climate with long summers and short, mild winters. In the hot weather of the first six months of the year on the island, the unpleasant smell of fish spread out around the market, bothering residents living nearby. The mismanagement and lack of supervision caused dissatisfaction among local people and tourists. In 2019, the Kish Free Zone organization decided to reconstruct and develop the Kish fish market to solve the problems and increase health levels and satisfaction.

The redesigning of the fish market was highly complex and it required obtaining detailed information about the whole process, from fishing to warehousing and distribution. To achieve this goal, it was necessary to investigate local fishermen, fishmongers, and customers for several days and a study of health standards could be considered the start of the design process and also a source of information for fish market requirements. Also, studying the successful experiences of international fish markets worldwide provided valuable information for the design and construction team. Time, budget limitations, and building location on an artificial land near the coast were some of the team's main challenges during the project.    Designing a fish market as a project with a special function was a brilliant chance to present more than a regular market. The presence of foreign and domestic tourists, the location of the current building in a local fabrication with its beautiful vernacular architecture, the history of pearl fishermen in the Persian Gulf around Kish island, and also the fishermen's customs and lifestyle were the sources of inspiration for creating worthy ideas. The main tendency of the concept idea was that the customer should get something more than a fish. In the Kish fish market. A complementary idea of an artistic-cultural attachment with a functional architectural design could enhance the space's quality and value to bring a new experience for customers in the market.
The reconstruction and development plan of the Kish fish market included 60% destruction and reconstruction of the current building with an area of 900 m2 (all the interior space and two of the main façades and walls) and extending 700 m2 by a new building beside the old part. The current and new building are connected together by a colonnade. The colonnade not only plays a climatic role by preparing cool shadows around the southern, western, and eastern parts but also creates harmony between the two buildings, which is repeated in the southern architecture of Iran. The 9-meter wind tower, which was inspired by beautiful simple and short cubic wind towers in southern cities of Iran, has a stair box and vertical access to the roof and mechanical equipment. This wind tower with its warm brown wooden lattice and khaki and light beige color is a part of building identity and a mark for the area. The color of the façades is completely fit to the context, and the exterior walls have been painted with the best quality colors to remain in high humidity and protect the building against scorching sun radiation.
The Kish fish market interior space contains a large hall to supply fish, a fish unloading and washing zone, an ice powder room, a freezing hall, a fish cleaning and waiting hall, a packaging and export, management and security, a waste room, staff dormitory, public toilets, and parking. To gather people outside, there is a small plaza on a local scale that has some platforms to sit and rest. There is an advanced underground sewage system, high-performance cooling facilities, a special fish cleaning worktable, and 16 fully stainless steel booths with equipped fish counters prepared to give service to the fishmongers and customers. Also, customers can order their favorite fish and cleaning methods through a proprietary application on their mobile device. Therefore, this is a modern market with traditional characteristics.
In the interior space and main hall, there is a large graphical, handmade inscription that shows the atmosphere of Kish port and the forgotten history of fishing precious pearls around the island by traditional launch. In addition, in order to emphasize Iranian culture, a poem was stamped on the interior wall about the sea and seagulls. There is an artistic translation of the poet in real space. Inside the main hall, some seagull sculptures hung from the ceiling while flying on the fish counters. The sculpture of the white abstract seagulls is inspired by one of the most famous poets of “Saadi Shirazi,” which implies the fact that God benefits all his creatures. A huge handmade wooden ship rubber and a beautiful graphical anchor are the other artistic items in the interior design, which might be a remarkable memory on the tourist’s minds.
